New Summit Yachts

Summit Yachts at McMichael Yacht Brokers

McMichael is proud to serve the racing community in the Northeast, and we are excited to offer the new line of racer/cruisers from Summit Yachts. If you are looking for a serious race boat to campaign under IRC, and you want the boat to be family-friendly as well, the Summit should be on your short list.

Summit Yachts has made a strong debut into the racing scene in recent years, with the Mark Mills-designed Summit 40 and Summit 35 winning Sailing World Boat of the Year awards in 2009 and 2010.

With former US-IRC Executive Chairman Barry Carroll and George Carabetta, the Summit Yachts program is informed by decades of hands-on racing experience – something that can be seen in their choice of designer. Mark Mills has established himself as today’s pre-eminent IRC designer, with his boats claiming definitive results in regattas from Europe/UK, to Hong Kong, to Key West Race Week.

At McMichael, we bring our extensive experience with IRC to the Summit line. In February of 2010 we took delivery of the first Summit 35 to come to Long Island Sound – a boat that will be raced actively in the local IRC 35 class.

Summit 35 Named “Best IRC Racer” by Sailing World Magazine

This marks the second year in a row that Summit Yachts has been named in Sailing World’s BOTY rankings. The magazine commented that the 35 is “definitely optimized to do well under IRC, especially in light air”.

The Summit 35 is designed to excel under IRC by combining the stability and power of a large sail plan and deep bulb keel with the low drag hull shape that permits strong all-around performance.  In conjunction with the optional retracting sprit, this allows sparkling light air performance , as well as offering enough stability to excel in a breeze. The Summit 35 builds on the Mills Design pattern of ergonomic dual-purpose deck layouts with race-friendly systems to ensure that both racing crew and family friends can enjoy leisure and competition on the Summit 35. Below the open and comfortable interior boasts three double berths, standing headroom, and a spacious galley.
The two spreader alloy rig supports masthead spinnakers flown either from an optional retracting sprit or the standard over-length carbon spinnaker pole. This simple keel-stepped rig configuration is controlled by a standard integral hydraulic backstay adjuster and allows non-overlapping jibs for the optimum combination of performance and ease of use.

Summit 35 #3 was sold by McMichael and is currently racing on WLIS in the IRC 35 Class. She can be shown by appointment.  Scroll down for production photos showing hull #3 at the factory.

Summit 40

The Summit 40 (King 40) burst onto the scene in 2009, with Soozal taking first place at Key West Race Week. At the same regatta in 2010, sistership White Heat – a Newport-based Summit 40 – again took first prize in IRC-2.

md35 Daysailer

Summit teamed up with Mills Design to create a modern daysailer that is as elegant as she is fast. The md35 design brief was for a fast, stable boat which sails to windward as well as she goes offwind. An uncluttered teak deck, open transom and centerline retracting sprit accomplish these goals. With a lifting T-keel and total weight of under 5000 pounds, the boat is easily hoisted at the yacht club and towed behind the family SUV.
