Newport, RI, is many things; but one of its claims to fame is being one of the World’s top yachting centers. Always a beehive of marine activity, both professional and pleasure, Newport’s busy summer season is about to begin.

This weekend, June 14-16, New York Yacht Club will be hosting it’s 170th Annual Regatta. “The Annual” traditionally attracts top sailors from across North America and even from around the World. Hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes compete for three days starting with Friday’s classic Around The Island Race where the fleets will circumvent Jamestown Island, a ~20nm race starting and finishing in the lower East Passage between Newport an Jamestown.

Saturday and Sunday will have fleets racing on ocean courses and “up the Bay.” Mostly drop-mark courses, the Classics (usually up the Bay) will race navigator courses.

In addition to the regular divisions of boats racing, NYYC is also hosting The 52 Super Series and GL52 Invitational that will run June 11-16 with the Around-the-Island race on Friday, June 14 as a stand-alone race and the 170th NYYC Annual Regatta Two-Day Series races dual-scored for both events. This regatta withing a regatta will feature the top all-pro TP-52 boats and sailors racing these flat-out rocket ships. They are bound to add a bit more excitement for those able to watch the racing as their boat speed and sail handling skills are not to be believed.

Oh, yes, The Annual is also a shake down regatta for the 2024 Newport-to-Bermuda Race hosted by the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. It should be noted that McMichael’s President Steve Leicht will be serving as the check-in for the Bermuda Race boats in his MJM 35 Moondog. The Bermuda Race starts Friday afternoon, June 21 in Newport Harbor right off Fort Adams providing spectacular viewing opportunities from shore.
